Re-Thinking the decline in trust: A comparison of Black and White Americans

The methods that were used in this article were integrated GSS files from 1972-2008 (1599).

The findings revealed interesting findings amongst white Americans. White Americans are more likely than black respondents to agree that most people can be trusted (1600). However, even though Whites agree that most people can be trusted, the study revealed that whites are starting to show a decline in trust (1600). Maybe why the whites are starting to show a decline in trust is because the divorce rate is on the rise. Maybe whites have higher rates of divorce and the one person they thought they could trust also known as their spouse, was not that trustworthy. White's also are not as likely to be as helpful as Black Americans (1600). If I could speculate as to why Whites are not as likely or inclined to help others is because maybe whites have too much pride about how they have established themselves in terms of their career and financial status.

The findings revealed mixed findings amongst African-Americans (1600). African-Americans have a higher increase for being helpful compared to blacks (1600). If I could speculate why African-Americans are helpful is because they know what it was like to be excluded from schools and restrooms, so maybe they tend to believe in being more inclusive. Maybe two, they feel that they have to continue the sense of helpfulness of all the men and women who fought to end discrimination against blacks and whites.

Black Female Career Success: The Importance of a Career Plan

The methods that were used was a direct mail survey that was conducted from February and March of 1999 (300). The people who took this survey were 105 Black females who were associated with the National Conference of Minority Public Administrators (300).

The results revealed that the majority of management supervisors were aged from 46-50, and one of the managers wrote the word retire as part of their future career plan (301-302). If I could speculate why retire is listed in terms of their future plans, it could be that maybe these women have children who are grown and have moved out to start a life of their own. These women have not only put in their time at their job, but they raised their kids. Now, that they have more free-time than they did, they want to enjoy it. I mean Cyndi Lauper did sing Girls Just Want to Have Fun.

The results also revealed that 66.7% were hired initially as intern candidates (304). I believe this is both a good and bad thing. Why I say it could be a bad thing is because some internships are paid, and others are not. So, if there was example two women of different colored backgrounds and one got paid and the other doesn't get paid, that is bad because it looks like color does play a part in determining which female gets paid and which doesn't. It is an awesome thing because these women have moved up in the ranks not only as a female, but as an African-American woman or colored women.
